Technology now resets expectations in weeks rather than years. Capital now compresses timelines once measured in quarters. Stakeholders now expect in real time what they once accepted annually. Talent now wants meaning and flexibility it once traded for security.
None of this is a phase to wait out. These are the conditions as they now stand, and they keep arriving faster and with more complexity.
Naming the three variables is the easy part. Most leadership teams could have listed them. What decides performance is whether each one is strong enough to carry weight on its own, and whether all three move together once they are. Those are two different problems, and most effort typically goes toward solving only one of them.
Depth without synchronization gives you separate strengths pulling in different directions. Synchronization without depth gives you alignment around weakness. Elevated performance now requires both across all three variables.
Tom has been fortunate to sit in all three seats: executive, board member and founder. Those are often three separate careers. It means he knows how a board will frame a decision, how an executive team will execute it and how a founder will move on it, and why those three rarely see it the same way: different mandates, different time horizons, different exposure.
His depth is in all three variables: leadership, strategy and technology. Each takes years to earn, which is why almost everyone stops at one. He can go as deep as the conversation needs in any of them, and he can see what a decision in one does to the others. Those second-order effects are what usually undermine performance, because no single function is accountable for all three of those variables.
Tom reassesses the landscape continuously. Most advice rests on an analysis someone did years ago and has been selling ever since. Keeping his guidance current is taxing, and he carries the load. That leaves senior leaders free to focus on what it means inside their own environment, which is the part only they can do.
Tom’s books, articles and posts delve into the challenges that have arisen in modern conditions, and what they mean for the decisions in front of you. Start with whichever one you’re facing now.
